Next.js vs WordPress for a business website in 2026
An honest comparison of speed, SEO, editing, security and cost, and when WordPress is still the right choice.
I build with both, and clients ask me this every week. The short answer: WordPress is fine for small sites that rarely change. Next.js with a headless CMS wins when speed, security and editing experience start costing you leads.
Speed
A typical WordPress site builds every page on the server when someone visits, then loads theme CSS, plugin scripts and page-builder markup. Next.js pre-builds pages as static HTML and serves them from a global CDN, so the first paint is usually much faster, especially on mobile.
SEO
Both can rank well. The difference is effort. With WordPress, good SEO depends on an SEO plugin plus a fast theme plus careful image handling. With Next.js, metadata, sitemaps, structured data and image optimisation are built into the framework, and Core Web Vitals usually pass without extra plugins.
Editing content
- WordPress: familiar, but page builders get messy and editors can break layouts.
- Next.js + Sanity: editors fill in structured fields and choose from approved sections, so pages stay on-brand.
Security and maintenance
Most WordPress problems come from outdated plugins and themes. A Next.js site has no admin login on your public domain and no plugins to patch. Content lives in Sanity, which is hosted and secured for you.
Cost
WordPress itself is free, but premium themes, plugins, managed hosting and maintenance add up. For most business sites, Vercel and Sanity free tiers are enough, so ongoing costs can drop to almost zero. The upfront build costs more than installing a theme.
When to stay on WordPress
- Your site is small, already fast and rarely changes
- You depend on a specific plugin ecosystem (complex LMS, memberships)
- You have no budget for a rebuild right now
If speed, editing pain or plugin maintenance is hurting you, a migration usually pays for itself. Send me your link and I’ll tell you honestly which option makes sense.
